Hello Dodgeballers one and all!

This past Sunday, December 11th, played host to the VDL Thursday Night Playoffs! 48 teams entered David Thompson prepared for epic showdowns, mind blowing catches and game changing cross-court hits. Many would have to settle for the delicious offerings of Re-Up BBQ but all would leave satisfied! But before we could get to the action, we had some awards to hand out to our teams!

O Canada was sung by Jay Vu of Sink or Swim! Then absolute carnage took hold! Players struggling and competing for the championship of their tier while onlookers gasped and were dazzled by the action in front of them. At the end of the day, six teams emerged victorious as everyone else put down their pulled pork sandwiches and chili to applaud their efforts!

The date was December 10, 2011. The time was 1pm. The place was David Thompson Secondary School. The game was Dodgeball! Monday Night Playoffs to be exact! After 10 weeks of grueling games for placement, our lovely players pull up their knee pads, tape up some fingers, and got that bunny through the hole to tighten up their runners and head to the gym to fight for a championship!

But before we began VDL how to spread the love to our Best Dressed, Best Cheer and Spirit Champions!

Greetings VDL,

As you may or may not know Wednesday Division took place on this glorious Sunday of December 4th, 2011. All teams came out with one common goal in mind….to win a VDL championship! For many, this would be their 234874571TH time down this road of glory only to have a championship snatched up from under their nose. Teams were amped and full of mojo just waiting to be unleashed on the courts! Before the fierce competition began some great awards were presented to most deserving teams to start off this day on a high note.

After a beautiful O Canada was sung by VDL’s own Mike Van Nen the games began. For some, the road to glory was a bumpy one with a dislocated shoulder here, 11 jammed fingers and one rolled ankle later the best of the best teams showed Wednesday Nights what great things could happen when good fun and good people come together for the great game of dodgeball.

Before teams were pitted against one another, the crowd shared in awarding the best dressed and best cheer awards for:

As the always entertaining Opening Ceremony came to a close, the angelic vocal styling of none other than Rec-less and Exec-less’s Jay Vu singing the Canadian national anthem calmed the players in the gym.

Shortly afterwards the most intense Dodgeball seen all season long kicked off! Teams won, teams lost and tears wereshed, but in the end the finals tested the best of players and demanded above and beyond efforts of the
battling teams to claim the championship titles of their respective tiers. For those of you that were unable to attend the show, shame on you; make it up by registering to the VDL’s Season 13 immediately! And for those who were fortunate enough to be in the presence of greatness and to live vicariously though the glorious victories, know who to aim to beat next season! And with that said, I bid you adieu and to wrap up Season 12 in shiny paper and top it with a festive bow because that’s a wrap!

On May 15th, the dodgeballers of Thursday night descended upon David Thompson. As Re-Up BBQ filled the gym with the scent of pulled pork and chili, the final dodgeball playoffs of Season 11 commenced. With the new playoff format in place teams were antsy and charged up as today would be the day they would dominate their tiers!

No competition goes without some friendly showdowns between teams for this season’s Best Dressed and (new) Best Cheer award! Teams got nominated and the winners were chosen strictly by their peers by cheering their hearts out for the team they wanted to win!

Before the gladiators took to their respective battlegrounds, VDL wanted to present awards to very deserving teams who exhibited the fun-loving spirit of the league.  VDL is a league made possible by the people for the people.  So, it was only natural that the people decided who would win Best Dressed and Best Team Cheer.  After the nominees were brought up to the front, the crowd’s cheers and applause determined the winners.

The winners are….Moustache Wranglers!  How do you beat a team who had a giant moustache as a macot?

The winners are….Halo Kitty!  Their cheer involved vogue-ing.  Enough said.

Most Spirited Team:

The winners are….Dodgeball I Choose You with a ten week average of 9.86/10!  They narrowly beat out runner-ups GG:6pooled who had a 10 week average of 9.83.

Our Best Dressed and Best Team Cheer winners were presented with $50 gift certificates from Whitespot and free bowling vouchers from Excalibur Bowling.  The most spirited team received a $100 gift certificate from Whitespot along with the free bowling vouchers.  Congratulations to all the winners!

After a boisterous rendition of the National Anthem from ALL the Monday players, we were finally underway and the action was non-stop for the rest of the afternoon.  If you blinked, you might have missed something absolutely mind blowing (again, no hyperbole).  The most amazing part of the whole afternoon was that in victory or defeat, all players were smiling, laughing and making new friends.  For those of you that couldn’t catch the live action, shame on you! T’was a mild and sunny Vancouver Saturday afternoon. The temperature would surely rise with the VDL’s S11 Tuesday Division underway!  We’re finally back on our home turf of David Thompson Secondary with Re-Up BBQ creating the aroma of what dodgeball playoffs should be like. The energy in the gym was a calm buzz as players did not know what to expect with the new playoff format. 360 degrees of dodgeballers warming up is quite the sight if you’re a fan, and just eye candy if you’re a VDL Exec. After the warm up, it was time for the Opening Ceremony where the entire Tuesday League Ops team was together at once to greet the entire Tuesday division.

Along with the new Playoff format, VDL had gone back to the pioneer days where we brought the teams nominated for an award to front and center to meet their peers. As all the player nominated, nominees assemble, we let the players once again dictate the winner of the awards!

1) Dodgeball 101, a general orientation for all new players to learn about the rules of the game and play in a supportive environment, is now available. The various sessions are listed below with a capacity for 60 players per event. All new players must attend at least 1 session before the start of the season. Teammates and Captains can attend with their new players too! Bring PE strip and water, and get ready to have some fun! To manage our numbers, registration is done individually (per player per event), not on behalf of your team. Please register 72 hours before the session.
