On May 15th, the dodgeballers of Thursday night descended upon David Thompson. As Re-Up BBQ filled the gym with the scent of pulled pork and chili, the final dodgeball playoffs of Season 11 commenced. With the new playoff format in place teams were antsy and charged up as today would be the day they would dominate their tiers!

Before the gladiators took to their respective battlegrounds, VDL wanted to present awards to very deserving teams who exhibited the fun-loving spirit of the league.  VDL is a league made possible by the people for the people.  So, it was only natural that the people decided who would win Best Dressed and Best Team Cheer.  After the nominees were brought up to the front, the crowd’s cheers and applause determined the winners.

The winners are….Dodgeball I Choose You with a ten week average of 9.86/10!  They narrowly beat out runner-ups GG:6pooled who had a 10 week average of 9.83.

Our Best Dressed and Best Team Cheer winners were presented with $50 gift certificates from Whitespot and free bowling vouchers from Excalibur Bowling.  The most spirited team received a $100 gift certificate from Whitespot along with the free bowling vouchers.  Congratulations to all the winners!

After a boisterous rendition of the National Anthem from ALL the Monday players, we were finally underway and the action was non-stop for the rest of the afternoon.  If you blinked, you might have missed something absolutely mind blowing (again, no hyperbole).  The most amazing part of the whole afternoon was that in victory or defeat, all players were smiling, laughing and making new friends.  For those of you that couldn’t catch the live action, shame on you! T’was a mild and sunny Vancouver Saturday afternoon. The temperature would surely rise with the VDL’s S11 Tuesday Division underway!  We’re finally back on our home turf of David Thompson Secondary with Re-Up BBQ creating the aroma of what dodgeball playoffs should be like. The energy in the gym was a calm buzz as players did not know what to expect with the new playoff format. 360 degrees of dodgeballers warming up is quite the sight if you’re a fan, and just eye candy if you’re a VDL Exec. After the warm up, it was time for the Opening Ceremony where the entire Tuesday League Ops team was together at once to greet the entire Tuesday division.

Along with the new Playoff format, VDL had gone back to the pioneer days where we brought the teams nominated for an award to front and center to meet their peers. As all the player nominated, nominees assemble, we let the players once again dictate the winner of the awards!

The nominations are open to the community, so all current VDL players are eligible to submit your choices for Best Dressed and Best Cheer for each night you play. We will reveal the top three nominations and you will get to vote for the winner (for their respective division) at Playoffs! To help you select, please see our team photo gallery.

Some things to keep in mind when nominating:

- Did it “wow” you?
- Did it make you smile/laugh every time you saw their uniform? Or heard their cheer?
- Did they make you think: “That’s brilliant! Why didn’t I think of that?”
- There’s no shame in nominating your own team either!

About the awards:

Best Dressed: This goes to the team with the most creative uniforms/costumes, where they stand out at their gyms and everyone easily identifies them. The players are consistently dedicated to wearing their outfits week in and week out.

Hello VDLers,

Happy new year! S11 is about 2.5 weeks away and we’re all excited to get back in the groove. We’ll be rolling out some more updates in the next few days, but we wanted to take a moment to share some big updates with the community. In the past 5 years, we’ve grown from 16 teams in S1 to 184 teams now, and every once in a while, it’s good to take a step back and rethink how things are going. After reviewing the survey results, having internal debates, reassessing our values, and reflecting on how the past 10 seasons have gone, here are the changes we’re making this season to make VDL even better. Drum roll please…

Tier Structure Changes

• We’re renaming tiers based on a number system (Tier 1/2/3) instead of an alphabetical system that has a bias towards grades.
• To build a sense of community, let players meet more folks and compete with a variety of teams, and allow for easy back-end logistics, the regular season across all nights will have 3 tiers (Tier 1/2/3) of 16 teams (Mon/Tues/Thurs); or 2 tiers of 15 teams and 1 tier 10 teams (Weds).
• To provide a more competitive playoff experience for all skill levels, we are testing a 6 tiers of 8 teams (Mon/Tues/Thurs). Wednesdays will have 4 tiers of 10 teams.  Seeding is based on regular season performance.
• Retiers on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be at the end of Week 3 and Week 7 (10 week regular season); Thursday on Week 4 and Week 8 (12 week regular season because of logistical reasons).
• We’re introducing a points system where a win in Tier 1 = 4 points; Tier 2 = 2 points; and Tier 3 = 1 point. This point system will determine final playoff seeding in the respective tiers (T1-6 on Mon/Tues/Thurs; T1-4 on Weds), making every week in the regular season competitive, and reduce sandbagging.
• After teams are placed in their final playoff tiers, a team’s spirit points are multiplied by 3 (for a score out of 30) and then added as wins so higher spirited teams have a chance for better playoff seeding.

Reward Structure Changes

We’re also making changes to the rewards structure to complement the above tier changes, emphasize our values, and to change the focus of winning something to winning a title as a team.

• We’re retiring the MVP Playoff Trophy. It’s not available to all tiers, nor can it be administrated properly. It worked when we had a 16/32 team 1-tier league but not anymore.
• As VDL is all about spirit, we’re introducing the Best Team Cheer Award for each night. We want teams to get creative and be loud out there! Winners get a one-of-a-kind VDL certificate and a $50 gift card for a team outing. This will be voted by captains in the final week of play.
• We’re keeping the Best Dressed Award to reward those who put an extra effort to play in style. Winners also get a VDL certificate and a $50 gift card, but will shift the voting of it to captains in the final week of play.
• No changes to Hootie the Spirit Owl trophy. Winners will get a nice bright VDL certificate and win a $100 gift card for a great team outing. This will be awarded to the team with the highest spirit points on a given night.
• We’re retiring medals, ribbons and the free deposits for champions. Instead, we’re redistributing the resources to create new (and awesome!) team trophies for all tiers. The trophies will range from prestigious in the higher tiers (competitive) to quirky and humourous in the lower tiers (recreational).
• Free VDL t-shirts for tier champions remain the same.

Change can be hard, and admittedly, we’re making some big changes in S11. Some players will be happy with these changes, and some, not. However, we firmly believe that these changes only make our culture better. The playing experience is still social, yet, competitive. Playoffs will run smoother, and with more tiers in playoffs with reduced skill gaps, all teams will experience more even match-ups. Sandbagging motivations are eliminated. The new rewards structure focuses more on team accomplishments, involves the community via captain voting, and is fair to all skill-levels. All these changes result in a great community based on strong values, with spirit being paramount.

Starting off with having RE-UP doing an awesome job keeping our bellies full, the playoffs were filled with a lot of new faces earning their first VDL Championships.

Power Rangers paved the way of firsts by finally getting the Best Dressed award… actually getting suits seemed to pay off.

w00t w00t! got some of their members their very first Spirit Award! Congrats to them.

The Champions of the nights all successfully went through the winners brackets to take their medals and titles home.

We Belong in the Tier Below This One started the winning off by successfully taking down Alpha Kenny Buddy Up in the Tier C Finals.

Flip The Bird took home Tier B against Huck My Life. The secret to them winning? Probably the team cheer involving back flips. Being that athletic is never a disadvantage on the dodgeball court.

The S.H.A.T  grabbed the Tier A title quite convincingly against Disney’s Recess in a fast paced finals.

We started the day off with an introduction to the Monday exec team and a quick shout out to all the other departments in VDL that help make VDL more than just random strangers throwing balls at each other. The crowd’s booming applause showed just how much our devoted players appreciated the hard work that these volunteers put in to bring them dodgeball each and every week.  Now, it was onto the first awards of the evening: Best Dressed and Most Spirited Team.

This season we had a lot of teams come out with matching uniforms or creative costumes.  Just to name a few, there was Cruisin’ for a Bruisin’, Ballerinas, Moustache Wranglers, Nom Nom Nom, Pysch, Dodge
My Durians, Balls Deep, Balls Deeper and The Dirty Ballers.  However,
by unanimous voting from the Monday exec team and Monday captains, our best dressed team this season were those fun-loving folks from Dinosaur Team!  Every season, they change their team name and re-invent themselves to make a run for best dressed.  This is their third consecutive Best Dressed Award.  That’s great spirit, Dinosaur Team.  Keep up the creativity and congrats on the award!  We can’t wait to see what you come up with next season.

The Most Spirited Team award is probably VDL’s most difficult award to win since it requires ten weeks of consistency and it’s voted on by your peers.  The Monday players, in general, are some of the most spirited players you’ll find in any sport.  However, after a close race with runner-ups Ohhh Yeah! and Sexy Times with Mikey Van Nen, the Most Spirited Team Award was awarded to Ninja Please!  They were given Hootie the Spirit Owl, VDL’s Most Spirited Team trophy.  For some of the players on this team, it was their 5th Hootie!  Now, that is some amazing spirit, people!

The opening ceremonies were concluded with the singing of the national anthem by our very own Mikey Van Nen.  Then, it was onto the dodgeball action!  But, first, here is a shameless plug:  Thanks to the good people from Re-Up BBQ for providing our players with some mid-game scrumptiousness with their pulled pork sandwiches and chili.

Now, back to the action.  It was a day where all players stepped up their game and displayed some of the most amazing dodgeball plays anyone has ever witnessed.  Despite the level of competition and the desire to win, our players still maintained the highest level of sportsmanship.  When the dust settled, who managed to take home the title of VDL’s Best Dodgeball Crew?  Wait a minute….we’re not that show.

Tier C
This is probably the most wide open tier on Monday nights.  There are no favorites and anyone could take home the Tier C championship.  In the battle of teams with the funniest names, Sooo Many Dodging and We Be Ballin’ Yo Fo Shiz, it was the Sooo Many Dodging team that proved they lived up to their name.  They were out dodging a team that was definitely “ballin’” all day….fo shiz.

Congratulations Sooo Many Dodging on your first Tier C championship!

Tier B
Dodge It Like It’s Hot found themselves in familiar territory as they faced off in their consecutive Tier B final.  Last season, they fell short on Thursday Night against the Hit List.  This time, they had the daunting task of trying to take out Team Xtreme.  Dodge It Like It’s Hot were looking to avenge an earlier loss to Team Xtreme, who sent them into the backdoor.  However, DILIH were not “Xtreme” enough to take down the eventual Tier B champs, Team Xtreme.  It was a very close battle that could have gone either way.  Despite the loss, DILIH were all smiles and very gracious in defeat.  Keep up the hard work and third time could be the charm.

Congratulations to Team Xtreme for your well deserved Tier B Championship!

Tier A
Tier A was full of heavyweight teams like Ballistics, Mr. Men and Little Misses, and Purple Monkey Dishwashers.  However, when all was said and done, it was VDL’s Most Spirited Team, Ninja Please! facing off against a veteran core in Animal Crackers.  Animal Crackers knocked Ninja Please! into a do or die backdoor final against Ohhh Yeah!  While Ohhh Yeah! put up a great fight, Ninja Please! were determined to get back to the finals and get another crack at taking out Animal Crackers.  While Ninja Please! managed to take one series from Animal Crackers and force a sudden death, winner take all match, the Ninjas could not overcome the teamwork and chemistry from Animal Crackers.  For some of the members on Animal Crackers, this was their 4th Monday title.

Congratulations to Animal Crackers on your Tier A championship!

MVP
There were several well deserving players for this prestigious award. Chris Tung (Ninja Please!) showed why he is one of VDL’s greatest players by showcasing game saving plays match after match.  Jayno (Ninja Please!) proved why he is regarded as VDL’s most elite catcher with his dynamic catches all over the court.  Cat (Animal Crackers) was easily one of the best players throughout the tournament with her timely catches and elusive dodging.  She was particularly impressive in the finals making a catch off Chris Tung, which crippled the Ninjas and secured the victory.

However, in a very tight MVP vote, our S10 Monday Playoff MVP was Ellie Moon (Animal Crackers).  Ellie sacrificed her body to protect her teammates and was the on court general leading her team through each series.  She was often the last player on the court and had to come up with big catches to keep her team alive.  For Ellie, this is her first MVP award to add to her many accomplishments in VDL. Congrats to all the nominees and a big congrats to Ellie on your MVP award!

Well, that about wraps up Season 10 ladies and gentlemen.  We laughed.  We cried.  We dodged.  Then, we laughed some more.  It was an electrifying season and if you want to electrify dodgeball courts at a gym near you, don’t forget to sign up for Season 11 and join us for more dodgeball awesomeness on Monday nights!

The day started out with a bang as Re-Up BBQ was enticing players to forgo their habits of not eating a meal before game time at Van Tech on a mild Vancouver Saturday afternoon. The energy was in the gym and busting through the double doors. After the warm up, it was time for the formal meeting of the entire Tuesday League Ops team and what a great reception of applause they received!

The Tuesday Division group picture rolled along and I must say we’re a ridiculously good looking bunch. How do you all do it?! The Best Dressed Award was awarded to The Hulagans for their superb coconut bras and grass skirts, which they donned every night of every week all season! The Spirit Award and the recipients of Hootie the Spirit Owl went to 8 Bit with a 10 week average of 9.88/10! Very impressive! After the anthem was sung beautifully by the lovely Julia Wu of The Gun Show, it was game time!

A few furious matches blow by and some unbelievable catches and dodges later, we came to the semi-finals of each tier:

Tier C
Team Sex Appeal vs Seeing Stars finished with Team Sex Appeal advancing into the finals with the infamous Dodgy Business. After a valiant effort from Team Sex Appeal, Dodgy Business’ work and business ethics was just enough to overcome the eye-blinding uniforms of Team Sex Appeal and their overwhelming spirit, enough to cripple the teams before them.

Great job Dodgy Business on your first Tier C championship!

Tier B
Snoop Dodggy Dodge faced off with 5 Jerks and a Squirt in the Tier B finals. Possibly the most exciting finals of the tournament. Snoop was coming into the final from the back door and needed to win 2 series to take the championship. Snoop was hungry. Snoop was fierce. Snoop C-walked their way to a first series win and faced a now awoken team of 5 Jerks and a Squirt! 5JS lit up the gym with some of the most impressive catches of the tournament and really clutched up to seal the deal in their favour. The climatic throw that won the match will be ingrained in the minds of many players for years to come! Should’ve been there if you weren’t!

Congratulations 5 Jerks and a Squirt on your first Tier B championship!

Tier A
8 Bit was in familiar territory and cruised to the finals with 4 straight wins. Little did they know they would receive such worth adversaries; Happy People. It is the inaugural season for a group of friends named Happy People. They took the harder route by going through the back door bracket. Some say they did it on purpose for the challenge! But I must tell you it was magic from that point onward as they pulled off some of the most ridiculous catches of the entire tournament and even took out the powerhouse teams of Einherjar and So You Think You Can Dodge to get a crack at the 3-time champions 8 Bit. Alas, Happy People put up a great fight but just couldn’t get enough leverage on the very experienced team of 8 Bit. At the end of the day when it’s all played and dodged, 8 Bit clutches the proverbial 4th championship and is now tied with Hatesauce, the champions of VDL Season 1-4. Another interesting bit of trivia is that Chris Tung played on both Hatesauce and 8 Bit!

Congratulations to 8 Bit for your 4th championship! Nice way to finish 10 seasons in the VDL!

The MVP was awarded to Chris Tung of 8 Bit for being a definitive presence on the court in the finals. It was quite unanimous in the voting circle! With this MVP and championship, Chris continues to be the most decorated player in VDL history with 11 championships in Tier A, 3 Hooties, and 3 MVP titles in 10 seasons of play!

Well, that concludes season 10 for VDL’s Tuesday Division! I hope you all had a blast! If your team wants revenge on the teams that knocked you out this season, register right away to insure you get your chance! Season 11 starts in February! Do not delay!

It started off as a beautiful, sunny, calm, maybe even serene day. Who knew that such great turmoil was brewing. A day long event it was filled with ups and downs, tribulations and triumphs, anguish and exuberance, victory and defeat as history was made.

With spirited play, good cheer, and friendly competition, “I Love You‘ succeeded in garnering their second “Hootie the Spirit Owl” in as many seasons of play. Congratulations. The best dressed award was given to ‘Whip n Dip‘ for their simple, and yet appealing, blue uniforms. Well Dressed.

The dodgeball playing itself was started off by a hearwrenching rendition of ‘Oh Canada’ by our lovely Marie Hui and the day only got better from there. Everyone stepped up their game for playoffs and it was easy to see why Thursday Division is considered the most competitive night as spectacular after spectacular play was done by one and all. However, as with most wonderful things, it had to come to an end As the dust settled, championships were found and lost, and great games were had and seen by all.

The first champions to seize their prize were the Tier C Champs the ‘Atomic Balls‘. Showing energy on par with a nuclear reactor they energized themselves to Victory through the tried and true method of winning all their sets and not leaving anything up to chance. The valiant runner up was ‘Somebody’s gonna get hurt real bad‘. While they put up one hell of a fight they were, sadly, the ones to be hurt in the end.

‘The Hit List’ was the second champion to be recognized, taking the Tier B title from the red hot ‘Dodge it Like it’s Hot‘. While ‘Dodge it Like it’s Hot‘ did the impressive feat of storming back into the finals from deep inside the back door bracket, they were unable to sustain their momentum and fell to the tune of ‘The Hit List‘.

For the second straight season the ‘Spartans‘ stormed their way straight into the finals, taking no prisoners in a fiery display of overpowering throws. However, for the second straight season they saw their championship slip away from them as the team that came through the back door took them two sets in the final. This season the winner’s of Tier A are non-other than ‘Young and Dangerous‘. With key players stepping up at the right time and doing the right things, they were able to show the resilience of their youth and how dangerous they are on the dodgeball court as they won the Tier A title. With multiple players stepping up and playing amazing, the MVP was not a clear cut decision. However, in respect to how much the man stepped it up at the right time in the finals, the MVP trophy was awarded to Kevin Vo.

That sums up the final portion of an epic season of Dodgeball, but this is not really an ending as there are always more great stories yet to come.
